Shrewface, by first impression, is another boring WindClan tom. He has the typical, slender, long-legged build, and a short, tabby pelt. That first impression isn't too far off.
Shrew has become something of a poor conversationalist. His speech patterns are sometimes awkward, and he's become more antisocial in recent years. This can be contributed to the death of his younger brother, as prior to Swiftpaw's demise, Shrewface was quite amiable, and even somewhat charming.
He ditched his passive nature for something more aggressive, though that hostility is more towards the other Clans than his own. He has an unjustified hatred of ThunderClan cats, only because it was their border that Swiftpaw lost his life in.
History:
Kithood: received "shrew-" for his brown pelt and narrow muzzle...
Shrewkit was born to Fawntail and Adderstrike, a young, strong couple, very much in love. When Fawntail bore them two healthy sons, the duo couldn't have been happier. They felt like they had been blessed; their kits were healthy, strong, and quickly became best friends. They showed great potential, and they were polite when it was required of them, but they tussled and played like any other kits.
Needless to say, Fawntail expected her life to get a whole lot better from there.
Apprenticeship:
But that wouldn't be the case.
Their mother had been too wrapped up in her optimism, trying to fight off the tragedies from her own youth, to expect what would happen next.
Shrewpaw and Swiftpaw often got to train together due to their having similar skills. As they were both good at fighting, and good at running, the two would spar and race out into the territory. It was friendly competition, but the first time they were caught, they were advised not to leave again without a mentor or permission.
The brothers blew this off, though Shrewpaw was becoming more wary. Compared to Swiftpaw, Shrew had always been the "goody-two-shoes", but his younger brother was able to drag his pushover brother into doing almost anything. And when it all came down to it, Shrewpaw loved the adrenaline rush, so he was more willing than he let on.
However, Shrewpaw's concerns would be brought to light during one "expedition", where Swiftpaw skid into the Moonpool stream during one of their races and was swept under the current. Shrewpaw looked for his brother for hours, ignoring the fact that in that span of time, it would be impossible for his brother to be alive without having emerged at some point. But all rational thought had left the young tom.
After hours of searching, he heard a yowl coming from the lake, and immediately bolted down, thinking it was his brother crying for help. When he arrived, his sights were less than what he had hoped for. A patrol had found Swiftpaw's body, bobbing along the lake shore, and the yowl had come from his father, who had collapsed with grief.
Shrewpaw never told his parents that he had been with Swiftpaw at the time of his death, as guilt wrought his body and he feared his parents hating him. When he had calmed down enough to reflect, he wondered, what if he had gone back for help instead of trying to find him on his own? But even more plaguing was the fact that they had even left camp together. If Shrewpaw had said no, if he had stopped him...
Warriorhood: received suffix "-face" for his pointed muzzle
Everything about becoming a warrior felt wrong-- from Swiftpaw's absence, to his own guilt and growing self-doubt. The stoic tom didn't smile or bat an eye during his naming ceremony, because it wasn't a celebration to him, only a mistake. He could feel the mix of emotions from his own parents, as well. They hadn't expected to be chanting only one name when their litter reached their twelfth moon.
They were proud of him, of course, but what if they knew?
All that had sculpted Shrewface in his youth-- his amiability, passiveness, love for adventure --had completely left him. He was void of anything that had made him who he was, and this shift in persona only cemented when his father died.
His mother was pregnant again, and Shrew was excited, but more disappointed than anything else. Not in Fawntail, but in himself. He had let Swiftpaw drown, and he had become an awful son, leaving Fawntail and Adderstrike with little to be proud of. Of course, he cared for his family, and he was there for them in any way he could be, but he had still let them down. He was but a shadow of his former self, and enough of a disappointment for his parents to have had another go.
He began to hang around his grandfather more, who had become something of a second mentor to him. Sheeptail's teachings, however, helped him cope with emotions, rather than his physical prowess. He was the only tom Shrew confessed to about what had happened just prior to Swiftpaw's death.
That part of the relationship wouldn't last long, unfortunately, as Sheeptail starved to death just before the birth of Fawntail's second litter. It was something that Shrewface had seen coming, but chose not to acknowledge. He had seen his grandfather give up his own share to Fawntail, without her really knowing, and as old as he was, Sheeptail couldn't have lasted long without nourishment.
When Fawntail's litter came, Shrewface cringed at their likeness to Swiftpaw, and immediately left the nursery.
